Q: About Honey the Movie

A: Honey is a 2003 movie that focuses on the life of the character named Honey who is a tough dancer and choreographer. She dreams of making it big as a music video choreographer. She teaches dance to kids in her Harlem neighborhood and attempts to encourage them to focus on other activities so they will stay off the streets. Honey catches a break from a big time music video director Michael Ellis when he casts her as a dancer in a music video. The price of her big break and subsequent success is not free however. Ultimately she is told by her mentor Michael that she must either sleep with him or risk becoming blacklisted in the entertainment industry. Her decision could have disastrous results not only for her, but for the kids who depend on her.

The movie has a diverse cast who all put in an excellent performance. Jessica Alba is the main character Honey in the movie. Mekhi Phifer plays the character Chaz. Romeo Miller plays the character Benny, who gets into trouble after Honey has a hard time balancing out teaching dance that he used to attend and doing her choreography. Joy Bryant plays Honey’s friend Gina. The “villain” character is played by David Moscow. The choreographer Laurieann Gibson plays Honey’s main rival. Laurieann’s life story is the basis of the story from the Honey movie. Laurieann Gibson has been a choreographer for many pop stars, including Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga.

In general the critics have panned the movie Honey. All of the critics on Rotten Tomatoes have similar reviews of the dance drama. One review on the Rotten Tomatoes website said that the movie is almost exactly like any other dance hip-hop movie. Another review called it a fairy tale with a dance instructor heroine who seeks to inspire some generic street kids to dance instead of getting in trouble with drugs or other bad news of the streets. The movie is not for everyone. It’s for fans of the actress Jessica Alba. It is also a movie for those who are big fans of dance movies and don’t mind one too many dance drama movie cliches.
